Paul Cocksedge- Manifestation of Authenticity

Paul Cocksedge is known for developing sculptural furnishings and large-scale public interventions that communicate complex concepts through pure, intriguing forms. Each artwork is a vehicle for narrative, Cocksedge draws inspiration from the physical process of making. In this interview, Yoko Choy is looking to understand more about the British artist and designer’s search for hidden values and properties in materials and how he transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Together with engineering partner Arup and architecture firm IDOM, Cocksedge Studio’s design made it through to the final round of the Expo 2020 Dubai UK Pavilion competition, chosen from a longlist of over a hundred entries. Reflecting the theme of the Expo – Connecting Minds, Creating The Future – every shade in the pavilion comes from the flag of a nation exhibiting at the event, expressing unity, partnership, and possibility. At the heart of the building is a sculptural centrepiece envelops visitors in colours and light, giving the sense of an 'impossible' structure. Although the studio didn't win this time, ‘I hope one day we will be able to do something with that concept, because I still think it's something that people will be observant to.’ Cocksedge says.
